Rev. Steve Hughey has been the Executive Director of the Central American Lutheran Mission Society (CALMS) since August 2006. Since graduating from Concordia Seminary in 1968 with a Masters of Divinity, Steve has been a cross-cultural missionary in Venezuela where he served as the director of the Spanish Lutheran Hour in South America for 10 years. He also served as a mission developer and cross-cultural trainer for 10 years on the Mexican border in El Paso, Texas. From 1988 to 2006, he served as a mission consultant at LCMS World Mission, most recently as the Director for Mission Response & Involvement.
Steve founded the Association of Lutheran Mission Agencies (ALMA) and continues his role as adviser to the board. He has a passion for reaching lost people for Christ and equipping Christians for active participation in God's mission. His experience, creative thinking, and existing relationships with mission-minded congregations and organizations are enabling CALMS to expand its influence in Central America and the Caribbean for the cause of Christ.
Steve is married to Grace Hughey, and together they have three grown children and three grandchildren. All three of their children have either served or are presently serving as cross-cultural missionaries. Grace has led over 20 mission trips to Latin America and is the director of small group ministry and training at St. John Lutheran Church in Ellisville, Missouri. Grace helps CALMS with short-term leader training.
