Short Term Projects

CALMS works closely with national churches and missionaries to develop short-term projects. We have some standard projects such as our "house construction" projects and "medical" projects in Guatemala. Working with US and Central American partners, CALMS designs projects that meet the needs of the mission field and take into account the gift mix of the North American short-term group. In this way, we seek to develop projects that are a "win-win" for all involved.

Currently, CALMS facilitates short-term projects in Belize, Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Panama. CALMS works hard to create projects that encourage US partners and Central American Christians to work side-by-side. We try to develop projects that help build the capacity of our Central American partners to do their ministry more effectively.

All projects are approved by the national churches, missionaries and authorized leaders and are designed to help fulfill the goals of the national churches and their congregations, schools, clinics and organizations. Many projects also focus on helping build the capacity of our partners to work more effectively. Where possible, we have also tried to design projects that involve nationals working side-by-side with North American Christians in order to help assure their ownership and to help build stronger and more healthy relationships between cultures and partners.

CALMS works hard to develop a variety of projects that are of interest to US partner congregations and their members. For example, there are projects that focus on construction such as CALMS' home construction projects in Guatemala. These are excellent entry level projects since they do not require a lot of previous cross-cultural experience. We also have projects that are health oriented that would be of interest to North American health-care professionals. There are projects that focus on Christian education that would be appropriate for people with an education background. In the following list, we include projects that would be appropriate for church professionals that involve teaching, etc. There are projects that focus on men, women, children and families. There are projects that appeal to almost every age group and level of experience.

Check out the examples in list today and get your people involved in a short-term project that can change lives! These projects are designed to help you and your congregation grow in cross-cultural skills and to help our Central American partners build the capacity of their leaders and grow their churches and ministries.

To lock in your project, you are asked to send CALMS a non-refundable sign-up fee of $150. When you successfully finish your project this amount is deducted from the other expenses for the project. Please email CALMS at calms@calms.com to let us know that you would like to choose a project. When you have received a confirmation email that the project has been assigned to you, please send your check to the attention of CALMS, 11906 Manchester Road, Suite 110, St. Louis, MO 63131. If you have questions about any of the projects, contact CALMS' Executive Director, Rev. Steve Hughey at calmsdirector@charter.net or call 314-640-4830.

Project Costs

Our North American CALMS' partners have asked us to give them more information about the costs of our short-term projects to help them in their decision making about short-term projects. Below is an estimate of the total costs for our short-term trips.

Per person costs include approximately $700 - $900 for food and housing (depending on number of days and type of housing, food choices, etc.) and a per person mission coordination fee of $150. There is also a required fee for trip insurance of approximately $4 per day which provides such services as medical evacuation or in-country medical services.

CALMS always prepares a budget for each group to help you plan and prepare for your trip. Teams are asked to pay one-half of their expenses before traveling. At the end of your trip, you will receive an invoice for the exact costs that are still owed.

Included in the budget for each short-term trip are the following: Health and Evacuation Insurance, on-field housing, food, local transportation, airport exit fees, visa costs,

The total average trip costs are currently $1,550 -$1,700 per person* plus the one-time $150 registration fee mentioned above (covers entire group) to lock in your project.

The above number includes air travel expenses*, depending on your location in the United States:

  • Panama: $600-$800
  • Guatemala: $500-$800
  • Dominican Republic: $500-$750
  • Belize: $500-$800
NOTE: Because of higher fuel costs, air travel in 2008 has increased about $200 over 2007 costs.

*These numbers are based on internet purchased travel by American or Continental. CALMS can also help with large group travel working with our special mission-oriented travel agency.

In addition to the above costs, some projects require additional funding for materials such as building supplies needed to complete the mission. This amount is indicated below in the project descriptions.
